世界第2位の富豪で米国人投資家であるウォーレン・バフェット氏は今春、新聞業界への投資を断念すると発言した。「いかなる価値であっても、ほとんどの新聞社は投資に値しない」と年次株主総会で彼は語った。「新聞各社は今後も損失を出し続ける可能性がある」とも言っている。

　ビジネスでも新聞業界にかかわり、業界への思い入れの強いバフェット氏だけに、この発言は非常に大きな意味を持つ。子供の頃、彼が最初に携わった仕事は新聞配達だった。そして、長い間「ワシントン・ポスト」紙や「バッファロー・ ニュース」紙の株主でもあった。「問題は、読者にとっても広告主にとっても、もはや新聞は必要不可欠なものではなくなっていることだ」と彼は言う。ニュースは今やインターネット上など至る所で、いくらでも手に入れることができる。要するに「新聞」というビジネスモデルは既に崩壊してしまったということだ。
